Blog #19: Food Memoir Comments

I agree with Areli in that I love how your food wasn't a fancy delicacy, but rather quite the opposite. This food choice really highlighted how valuable and meaningful it is in your life. Additionally, your memoir itself really brought out your own voice, giving life to the experiences you've had in your life. In the fishbowl discussion, I liked how you pointed out many of the complexities and ironies in "Their Eyes Were Watching God" and several of the poems.

Noah, great job on your food memoir and fishbowl discussion!Firstly, I thought your food story was very touching and certainly relatable as a high school senior who has a limited number of home cooked meals left before he goes off to college. I think your story really connects with the communion idea of Thomas C. Foster. In your story, the peppermint patty brownies were more than just a food, they were very much a part of your social growth. One aspect of your fishbowl discussion I thought was interesting was when you synthesized the poem "Hawk Roosting". You brought up that change is not always a necessary development in life and that eventually there may come a time where change should be avoided. I think this idea is very applicable to today where change and progress seem to be the mantras of society.

Salutations Mr. Hegde! Excellent job on both your food memoir and the fishbowl discussion. One main point I got out of your discussion was your reference to Maslow's hierarchy of needs. More specifically, I agree with your argument that the hierarchy is fluid, and that certain may need unique things– such as power– to satisfy them. Your discussion reminded me of a quote, "Power tends to corrupt and absolute power corrupts absolutely." This is most signified in Joe Starks. While he always has good intentions for Janie, his ultimate need for control leads to his downfall and Janie's disillusionment of him. Overall, very nice job. Your memoir was very witty and entertaining and your fishbowl discussion was quite intellectually stimulating.

Congrats Charlie!I really enjoyed your memoir and video. I most appreciated how you looked at your own heritage: your father, grandmother, and grandfather. I think this painted a great illustration of who you are and how you came to be. It emphasized the meaning that the fish stew has for your personal identity. In your fishbowl discussion, I particularly took note of your reference to the poem "5 AM." You related the speaker's experience walking through a city with Janie's quest for happiness. I think it was a very valid point that there is always an end to the journey of fulfillment. No matter who it is, there will be a point where that particular person finds true happiness and no longer desires to change. You were very insightful in your discussion and you did a fabulous job.
